Creating and Using API Keys with Java Based Ajax Services
Abstract: This article demonstrates the client and server side pieces to using an API key. Lots of code, and shows how to generate the key from the client web site address and a secret service token.
Motivations for using an API key: - Restrict Hosts - We want to control what which hosts can access our service.
- Ability to Track Usage - We want to know who is using a given service.
- Meter Service - We want to regulate how much a given service is used during a given period of time.
- Guarantee Level of Service - Depending on an agreement we may want to provide a varying level of service. This may be in terms of response times, reliability, or availability.
For all of the cases listed above we will need to provide a means to make the process as easy and flexible as possible. What is needed is a way to provide access to a service we want while at the same time preventing unwanted access.
